This is one of my favorite subjects. If you give it the time you can create or find some amazing images to capture.

Kirk > These were shot indoors with light from a window to give the dramatic shadows.
Kirk > The apple blossoms were shot in full sun light casting shadows of the pistols on the blossom petals.
Kirk > The shadows here have greater dimension due to leaves, branches and blossoms all casting shadows. Those in the background are in deeper shadows. This all helps isolate and bring attention to the primary blossoms right up front.
Kirk > This is a knot in an old cedar 4x4 post that was part of the swimming pool fence at my home where I grew up. I shot it indoors with light from a window to create the shadows.
Kirk > Recently I was in Paradise, California for a short visit. I brought home several very big pinecones from the local Ponderosa Pines. I have them in my home. This is a detail shot using natural light from a window to create the contrast of light and shadows.
Kirk > I think this is one of my favorite images. I grabbed a handful of sea shells and rocks and placed them on the 4x4 cedar post and positioned it all in natural light coming in a window. I found the final effect very peaceful and pleasing. I think it is the natural harmony of the wood, stone, shells and the rope in the background for added texture.
Kirk > Imaginary Friends - This idea came to me when I first took the challenge to start shooting shadows. The set up was time consuming and I had to round up some kids in the neighborhood as talent, but it came out just how I envisioned it.
Kirk > Sometimes you stumble upon shots. That's what happened here. The wooden water bucket is in my in-law’s sauna. They sold the house and my mother-in-law asked me to shoot a few shots of the sauna for her. I got obsessed with the light coming in a small window that hit the bucket. I shot close to 80 shots, but this was the very first and best shot, of the series.
