2nd annual Magleby Cabin Escape

Finn Family Staycation : We had Lisa's Finnish family come to visit this summer. They spent nearly two weeks with us and we had a wonderful time. Lisa packed the days with many activities. We hiked to Timp Caves, Steweart Fall and Cascade Springs, visited Park City, shopped the outlet stores and rode the alpine slide and zip line. We went to Moab and Dead Horse Point, hiked to Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch in 105 degree temperatures. We rode the Heber Valley Railroad and got kidnapped by train robbers who took us on a long horse ride in the mountains. We went boating on Deer Creek with good friends and had more fun than you can imagine on tubes pulled behind the boat. We visited Lisa parents in Logan and had family photos that could be the last photos we every have all together. We ate too much and laughed even more. New $20 bills - Proof that money does grow on trees.

Sean and I went to Goblin Valley State Park to camp. There was a full moon. It took about 22 seconds to get the stars and rock formations exposed properly. A small flash light created the glow inside the tent.

This is Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach just after the sun set.

10/17/07 – This photo has been a subject I’ve shot before and is now one in a series of four images. See 2/1 for winter, 4/1 for early spring and 4/14 for late spring. I didn’t realize I missed a summer shot when the leaves have turned from green to red all summer, not just in the fall. Oops.

5/28/07 – This seemed like a great shot for today, Memorial Day. Lisa saw this shot in the Orem cemetery so we went back just before sunset. There must have been hundreds of these crosses with flags.

12/19/07 – This is a detail shot of a fiber-optic desk light. I shot it with very little depth of field so the light at the end of each fiber was in focus but everything else was out of focus.

6/10/07 – Last night the big finish for the Orem Fest was the fireworks. I got several great shots but the colors of this image were so good it was my first choice. I’m shooting a new camera (D200) with a new lens (vibration reduction). It made it possible to shoot this handheld – no tripod or monopod. They came out great.

I generally prefer to shoot landscape without people in them, but the ATV rider anchored the image, created perspective and added to the story that the image had to share.

This might be my all time favorite image. It has special meaning to me. My parents have several walnut trees around their home and they produce thousands of walnuts every year. My dad collects them, husks them and sets them out to dry. Then he bags them and gives them away. I was at their home and was walking by when I saw his work gloves sitting on top of the walnuts. For me it told the story and represents how my dad has always worked hard around his yard. Someday he will be gone, but this photo will always remind me of who he was.

10/7/07 – Shot from my home you can see Baldy in front and snow covered Timpanogos in the background. The setting sun has cast a red glow over everything.

7/12/07 – This is a double exposure. One shot was exposed to capture the rich colors of the sky. The second was to properly expose for the building. Once combined it looks just like it did if you were there in person. This is the Mt. Timpanogos Temple here in Utah.

We hiked all night long in total darkness to be on top of Mt. Timpanogos by sunrise. We decided to wait at the saddle (bottom left) for sunrise before taking the 45 minute hike to the summit. I was glad I did. The light was fantastic.

1/24/07 – This is an image I shot last summer at Orem’s Summer Fest parade. The image never appealed to me. But yesterday I learned a new photo technique called the Orton Effect. The original effect was done with slides long before digital imaging and named after Michael Orton who first used the technique. He would shoot two images, both under exposed. One was in focus and the other out of focus and then he would sandwich the two images into one mount. The result was a dreamy, luminescent image that can make a dull image pop. For me, it did just that for this shot. I never saw anything in this image until I applied the Orton Effect. – Cool!

3/10/07 – I was going out late this afternoon to run some errands and the sun was just setting. We had low thick clouds most of the day, especially around the mountains, but the sun had dropped so it was shinning under the clouds so it hit the mountains east of our home creating this view.

6/15/07 – Just a short distance up Provo Canyon there’s this interesting feature. There is a large water pipe that occasionally releases water down the mountain back into the Provo River creating these falls. Most of the time they are dry so it was lucky to get this shot.

I was driving up the south fork of the Provo Canyon and saw this little "Holiday Shack". I sold this image to a company that distributes holiday decorations. They used it in their catalog. I've also sold it as a framed fine art print.

$This calm and peaceful reflection isn't what you might think. This is a puddle in a parking lot. The image was shot by putting the camera on a monopod, setting the timer and then placing the camera upside down just a fraction of an inch above the water. The puddle is not more than an inch or two deep but created the perception of a lake or pond from this perspective.$

This was shot up American Fork Canyon near my home. I've printed this one out large, framed it and sold it as a fine art print. The detail, especially on the tree trunks, is wonderful, not to mention the richness of the colors.

I captured this image on a snowshoe trip. I was headed back to my vehicle and the drifts of snow against the pine trees caught my eye. It is best to view this one a little larger to see the detailed texture of the snow. Just click on it.

I took the entire family golfing and we got hit by a thunderstorm that drove us off the course. I captured this image as the storm passed by and the sun was setting.
